Latin America Vegetarian Support Specialist

Terms of Employment: Full-Time, Exempt
Reports to: Global Vegetarian Support Manager
Position Location: Mexico

 

Position Objective: 

To identify and reach members of the Spanish-speaking Latin American public who are near a critical tipping point between eating meat and eating vegetarian and provide support and resources to tip them toward eating vegetarian 

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Monitor and reply to incoming emails from individuals attempting to reduce or eliminate animal product consumption but having difficulties
  • Carry out “social listening” on social media to identify individuals who are at or near a tipping point between eating meat and eating vegetarian and provide them with Mercy For Animals resources to help them go or stay vegetarian
  • Monitor social media outlets and public forums to identify individuals at or near a tipping point to provide them with MFA resources and to stimulate community discussion about vegetarian eating
  • Help coordinate and train volunteers to assist with social listening and email replies
  • Record and review analytics related to email and social media response to ensure goals are met and work completed in a timely manner
  • Carry out other activities to assist those who are at or near a dietary tipping point as assigned by supervisor
  • Research new ways to identify and reach members of the public who are at or near a dietary tipping point
  • Keep apprised of research on barriers to vegetarian eating and on successful methods of changing diets and habits
  • Work closely with MFA’s Latin American communications coordinator, director of education, and other staffers within Education Department to help ensure the organization’s vegetarian advocacy efforts are synergistically coordinated

Position Objective:

Manage day-to-day operations of Mercy For Animals Latinoamérica, including general administration, human resources, finance, and government compliance

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Manage day-to-day matters relating to the general administration of MFA Latinoamérica
  • Serve as the organization’s human resource manager and implement MFA’s human resource policies, including time off reporting, maintenance of employee files, hiring and separation protocols, government reporting, and grievance procedures
  • Assist in creation of job descriptions
  • Manage recruitment workflow and training in conjunction with the home office
  • Coordinate provision of employee benefits with the home office
  • Create, implement, and periodically update an employee handbook in consultation with local and home office legal and operations teams
  • Respond to staff inquiries regarding MFA’s policies
  • Develop and implement MFA Latinoamérica’s finance and accounting procedures as well as manage day-to-day finances, including payment of invoices and check requests
  • Work with all staff to manage and track financial activity
  • Serve as liaison between accounting firm and the home office and assist in managing the payroll system as needed
  • Oversee annual budget development and monitor annual spending with the home office
  • Manage and execute MFA Latinoamérica’s government reporting and compliance in partnership with the legal and operations teams

Position Requirements:

  • Excellent written and oral skills in English and Spanish
  • Undergraduate degree in a related field or equivalent experience
  • Ability to work well in a team, take direction, demonstrate initiative, respond well in a crisis, moderate disputes, and represent MFA professionally and enthusiastically
  • Willingness and ability to travel
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Docs
  • Experience managing finance, business, administration, or human resources (preferred)
  • Support for MFA’s philosophy and ability to professionally advocate MFA’s positions

Position Location: Mexico 

 

Position Objective: To assist MFA’s legal advocacy efforts in Mexico by advocating on behalf of farmed animals and ensuring the organization’s legal compliance in all aspects of its operations.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Provide legal support to the investigations department by conducting necessary legal research into all relevant laws and regulations and addressing any legal issues arising during the course of investigations
  • Assist in the organization’s requests for criminal prosecutions of animal abusers by reviewing investigative footage, drafting legal petitions, and meeting with and assisting law enforcement
  • Work to advance farmed animal interests through legislation
  • Undertake legal review of corporate campaigns materials
  • Research, develop, and implement proactive legal initiatives, including lawsuits, petitions, and complaints to government agencies
  • Draft and review contracts, leases, and other legal documents
  • Assist the general counsel with governmental compliance and labor and employment issues
  • Handle any other legal issues that may arise during the day-to-day operations of the organization
  • Develop and maintain close working relationships with attorneys in private practice and other animal protection organizations

Position Requirements

  • Law degree from an accredited law school
  • Preferred minimum of 3–5 years’ experience practicing law
  • Fluency in English
  • Thorough knowledge of animal rights legal issues and MFA’s campaigns
  • Demonstrated ability to create and deliver presentations, address and overcome problems, and negotiate with third parties
  • Strongly preferred ability to conduct press conferences and interviews with media
  • Proven exceptional organizational and writing skills
  • Ability to work well in a team setting
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills
  • Willingness and ability to travel on short notice
